Our Table: The Oscars 2012

In keeping with our annual tradition, we again celebrated the Academy Awards in a big way. After sharing our festivities on this lil' ol' blog last year, we couldn't let this year go by without divulging yet again. Bill and I may have had to randomly guess our picks on the ballots, placing us pretty much dead last, but when it came to the food it's a whole nother story. We kind of like to cook. So between the two of us along with family and friends, we put together a nice little spread for the occasion.

From our table to yours, we give you the nominees for Best Picture...

1) The Decendants. Because what's more "decadent" than creamy gooey irresistible cheesy mac n' cheese?

2) Moneyball. Bean burritos for my man Billy, and Cake Balls. And let me tell you, those cake balls? They were money.

3) Hugo. The movie takes place in France.. French cheeses.. yea, you can't win em all :)

4) The Artist. True to Bill-form, he made 28-day aged (as in, no packaged yeast) kalamata olive and caramelized onion artisan bread in both a loaf version, and in mini-melt sandwich versions. The bread totally lived up to its Best-Picture-counterpart.. it was incredible.

5) Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close. "Key" lime for the key-themed movie, martinis to "toast" with, and the rims were pop rocks. They were "loud" :)

6) The Tree of Life.

7) War Horse. Oat & Carrot cupcakes.

8) Midnight in Paris. Midnight chocolate cake with mascarpone icing and port wine poached pears.

9) The Help. Fried Chicken and Chocolate Pie. If you've seen the movie, the pie is both self explanatory as well quite unappetizing. However, I totally had two slices ;)

So there you have it. Academy Awards, food, fam, and friends. Nothing better. So, how did you spend your Oscar evening? Glued to the TV not missing a single Billy Crystal joke, wardrobe malfunction, or leg kick? Flipping through the channels occasionally landing on the awards? Forgetting/not caring it was on all together? Do tell.

Five Years

Five years. Five years ago today I stood alone in the quiet calm Neuroscience lab at Connecticut College running tests again and again, 20 times that day, not able to focus on a single second. It was Winter break and the building was empty. Any other day this would be my sanctuary. A glorious opportunity to focus on everything I had to get done before the undergrads returned to the lab, bringing with them a world of college life, boyfriend gossip and where the best party was gonna be that night. But that day it was different. No distractions around me, but every distraction in the world going on in my mind. Stopping then starting again, staring into the distance then shaking myself back to reality.

Getting home I frantically scrambled around my teeny apartment picking out the best outfit, blow-drying my hair making sure every strand fell perfectly into place. Then finally, oh so finally, sitting at the first dinner I’d ever have with the man I was to spend the rest of my life with. He was the chef and owner of the two best restaurants in town, and man was I nervous. We sat at a dimly lit table against the wall, and thank God for that because he wasn’t able to see my hands fidgeting non-stop on my lap.

We talked about everything. Life, dreams, goals. The attainable and the unattainable. We talked of the past and of the future. Then, we talked of Melt Sandwich Shop. Sure it didn’t have a name at the time, or a concept for that matter, but it had sandwiches. Sandwiches that would be so good and so different. It had no plan, nothing written down. It was all just an idea Bill had had forever yet had never had anyone to share it with. Five years ago, his dream officially became mine.

People always ask me if I miss Neuroscience. If I’ll ever go back to “doing what I love”. I always answer with a polite laugh and say sure I miss it and sure I loved it, but I’ll never go back. The truth is, I could never even imagine going back. The dream that has become Melt Sandwich Shop is far too big and far to amazing to even think that my life could ever have been anything else. Five years and we’re still only getting started. This morning I stood in our shop. Our sandwich shop that now has a concept, and a name, and food that blows all other places out of the water. I answered the phone and I took an order. I threw some freshly marinated chicken on the grill and I cut and wrapped sandwiches that made my mouth water. I looked at my husband and we laughed. Well, first we argued about the food order I was about to place, and as always my decision won out, then we laughed. Then I remembered that this all began with just a dream, five years ago today.

They came to us to check in with a few of their 'favorite' Real Wedding newlywed couples they had featured throughout the year (Bill and I appeared in Brides Connecticut back in January) for an article on handling personal finances during the first year of marriage. So, of course for us, the article quickly became all about the most delicious place in the world and our core of all things finance-related; Melt Sandwich Shop.

In The Press: 914 Inc. Magazine

I am completely honored to have been included in the current issue of 914 Inc. Magazine, a Westchester Magazine publication, in the cover story "Westchester's Wunderkinds: 24 Under 30". They define Wunderkind as 'a person who succeeds, especially in business; at a comparatively young age'. When I heard I was to be included in this article, my first thought was "Me?! I think you must have the wrong girl!". The 23 other individuals also featured truly have accomplished amazing things at such young ages, and I am incredibly humbled to appear alongside of them. A giant Thank You goes to Westchester Magazine for such an honor.

What's New: The Garden Combo

Well, it certainly doesn't seem like it with the nice little coating of snow most of us now have, but according to my calender, it is Spring! And Spring is a great time of year in the Hall household because it means two things: First, it's time for sweet tea, and second and most importantly, it's time to wear short pants! That has always been Bill's philosophy on Spring and has slowly rubbed off on me over the years. Sweet tea and short pants. Really, it's story all of its own dating back many moons to his childhood....

But, I digress. Like I was saying, It's Spring! Which gives us our newest combo of the week, The Garden. This one brings the essence of this beautiful season into a sandwich with a Grilled Garden Vegetable Salsa (Grilled Zucchini, Asparagus, Onions, Tomatoes), Fresh Baby Arugula, and a Creamy Ranch Drizzle. We recommend it with just about any of our meats or vegetarian options since it really pairs up well with everything. One taste and you will feel like you're taking a bite out of your grandmother's garden... well... maybe not since that might make you a deer... but you get my point.

Here we have it topping our sweet maple cured ham on our whole wheat multigrain short roll.

Westchester Weekends: Chocolations

First, I have to tell you a secret. About me. It's not pretty, but it's true. It's about my addiction...

...to chocolate. I don't just like chocolate, I love chocolate. But really, love doesn't adequately describe my feelings for chocolate. I love chocolate so much that I truly can not remember a single day in my life where I have gone without eating it. Yea... I told you it wasn't pretty.

Phew! That was tough. But, now that that's out there, you can only imagine how I felt when I heard of a store in Westchester called "Chocolations"... instant googly eyes, weak knees, uncontrolled drooling... again, not pretty, but true. I heard about Chocolations through the Twitter grapevine a while back, and after one look at pictures of their delicious treats frequently posted on their Facebook page, I knew it was my kind of place!

I had been dying to get down there for quite some time, and this weekend I finally made it. Man was I happy I did! As soon as I walked in the door, it smelt like I would imagine Heaven being like. Chocolate Heaven.

Their shelves were stocked with everything from white chocolate to milk chocolate to dark chocolate, covering any delicious thing you could think of. From marshmallows to pretzels to popcorn, you name it, they had it! Coated in chocolate, no less. I picked out a few handmade chocolate covered oreos for around $1 each.

Just as I expected.... they were amazing. The shelves were also full of seasonal items galore, from St. Patty's day to Easter to Baseball, there was a chocolate treat to match!

As I made my way to the back of the store, it only got better because that is where they had the candy by the pound. I probably would have bought at least 10lbs if I didn't think Bill would be a little concerned upon my return. Fortunately (or unfortunately for me), logic set in and I decided a 1/4 pound would be enough.

Good thing I listened logic too, because my jeans wouldn't have had much chance of fitting today if I hadn't. These were gone no more than 30 seconds after we opened the box. If you look closely, you might even be able to see Bill trying to sneak one away ;)

Whether it is for a special occasion, a holiday, a gift, or even a no-reason delicious treat on any day of the week, Chocolations is definitely the place to go! Check them out! Just like me, you'll be happy you did.

Hello Monday Morning! Nothing like a lovely snow coating to ring in Spring, right?!

We're bringing you a great Westchester Weekend post a lil' later today, but first we have to give a huge thank you to The White Plains Patch for featuring us last week in their article titled Local Lunch On a Budget. I especially love this article because of the bad rap that eating "out" for lunch has garnered since the recession hit. Sure, brown-bagging it could save you a few dollars if you do it right, but really, grocery shopping, especially for the good stuff, ain't cheap! What fun is planning, preparing, cooking, and packing up your own lunch every single day when there are so many places that can make an incredibly delicious, fresh and healthy lunch for you at a super affordable price?

What's New: The Guinness

Today's the debut of our newest and greatest sandwich combination... The Guinness! With Pan-fried Cabbage, Melted Onions, White Cheddar Cheese, and an INCREDIBLE Irish Guinness Gravy, this one is better than kissing the Blarney Stone while being held by a Leprechaun on a beautiful day in Ireland. I swear on my Claddah ring :)

We recommend it with our Corned Beef, but it's rich deliciousness goes well with the Brisket, Aged Beef Top Round and the Slow Roasted Turkey Breast as well.

He takes his fork and dives into the plate full of mashed potatoes. Normally it would be french fries covered in melted cheese and gravy, but since it is Lent, and we both decided this year would be the year to give up fried food, mashed potatoes it is. I take my fork and scoop off half his bite as it leaves the plate en route to his mouth.

"What!" I say as he looks at me, mouth open, desperately trying to disguise a smile, "You were taking the best bite!"

We both laugh at each other and he dives back into the plate; take two. His bite doesn't look as good this time, so I let it be. As we sit at our favorite booth in the corner, we talk. I tell him about my 4 year old cousin's stories and he tells me about the newest slicer he wants to get for the shop. I go on about the millionth crazy dream I had last night as he listens intently for the millionth time, soaking in every detail. We talk about what we want to do next at Melt. Where we want to go and how we want to get there. What we can do this week, and where we want to be a year from now. We bounce ideas off each other and throw in a joke or two keeping our lunch light hearted and full of love, just as a Sunday should be. It's our day.

We stop in at the grocery store across the street. As we weave through the aisles pushing our cart with one wheel that refuses to roll straight, I feel like a regular ol' couple for the first time in a long time. The past few weeks have been crazy and insane, but full of amazing things for Melt. Expanding our hours into the evening, toying with new menu items, growing our never ending list of made-from-scratch ingredients to almost 100%... Sundays have came just as quickly as they have went, and Mondays have arrived pretty much without warning.

We stop for a milkshake on the way home. Not because we're hungry, but because it's the perfect thing to do on a sunny afternoon. And for the first time in a long time, it feels like a regular ol' Sunday. Sure, Monday will be here before we realize we even slept a full nights sleep, but for now, this day is here to stay.

What's New: The March Madness

Noo, we're not talkin' basketball... we're talkin' our newest sandwich combo! "The March Madness" makes its Melt debut today and let me tell you, it is crrrrazy! (Hence the 'madness' :) If it were in the tournament it would most definitely be the #1 seed. No question. And it would totally make it to the final four. No problem. I'd even say it would win the National Championship... Yea... it's THAT good.

It has spicy pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, authentic Russian dressing, and Bill's famous coleslaw. We recommend it with the aged beef top round, slow roasted turkey breast, or grilled chicken, but it is one that seriously goes well with everything!

Stop in and check it out! You'll be happy you did.

Our Table: The Oscars

My family has always had a serious love of movies. Growing up, I don't know if a day went by where we weren't referencing my mom's "Academy Award Encyclopedia" (yes, this was before the days of Wikipedia guys), or my sister wasn't editing her running tally of favorite movies of the year written on the dry erase board dedicated solely to the subject. We spent many a weekend excitedly heading to dinner and a movie as a family and discussing our favorite scenes the whole way home. So, as a result, my sister and I have taken our Oscar Parties very seriously for years now. When Bill joined on in, the parties were upped to a whole new level with some serious eats. Two years ago we had a spread of food so big we probably could have fed 50 people... and there were 4 of us. So, this year, with a whopping 10 Best Picture Nominees, and many more friends ready to join the party, it was on.

Witout further adieu, from our Oscar-watching table to yours, the nominees for Best Picture are (ahem, were)...

1) True Grit. This was one I didn't see this year, but apparently a pivotal scene involved some chili made over a fire. Don't know if the cornbread we had with it (served in a cowboy hat, no less) was invloved or not, but it suuuure was delicious!

2) The Social Network. We have to give a huge shout out to our friend Mary Marantz for tweeting this idea! It was just too good to pass up :)

3) The Fighter. Okaaaay, so this one was a stretch. But who doesn't need an excuse for some Mac 'n Cheese?!

4) Winter's Bone.

5) The Kids are Alright. I seriously apologize in advance for this one...

6) The King's Speech. Since we came up with this, I've been unintentionally spelling 'peach' as 'peech'. I did fix it for the sinage, but think I like peech better. It was tasty nonetheless.

7) 127 Hours. I also apologize in advance. I'll spare you the explanation, but if you've seen the movie, you'll understand.

8) Black Swan.

9) Toy Story 3. Almond 'Joy Story' bars!

10) Inception. Yes, we realize this cake only has 3 layers. Let's just say we were trying to confuse you just as much as the movie itself. Either that, or we counted the ganache as a layer... take your pick of excuses :)

Westchester Weekends: Grand Prix NY

Hello Sunday! Oh, how we love you.

Time again for another serving of fab finds from Westchester County! Bill and I recently hit up Grand Prix NY up in Mt. Kisco to have a little racing fun. It is a facility that is set up with go-cart racetracks galore, games, and a restaurant to boot. It's meant for kids and for adults, and trust me when I say, this is not your average arcade.

We arrived and filled out all the necessary information, then signed up for the next available race. It was a little pricey at $35 each*, but for full access to the facility, and the awesomeness of the race we were about to experience, it was worth it! We started out by watching a training video, then headed to the changing room to done the appropriate gear:

Then it was off to the races! Before we hopped in, we were told that the carts can reach speeds of 40mph. Crazy talk!! For a girl who's scared to kick it to top speed in Mario Kart, 40mph sounded completely death-defying. Once I put the pedal to the metal though, it was on! Innnntense.

Those babies could move. I figured I had to have been going at least 70mph the whole time. But, after finding out I came in 8th out of 10, I doubt I even hit 10mph.... Bill, however, was a racing fiend! He placed 4th. So, we didn't take home any gold medals, but at least we didn't come in last! And that's good enough for me.

What Fits

I’m right handed, he’s left. It was one of the first things my mother noticed about Bill the day she met him. As he signed his name, with love, on my grandmother’s 90th birthday card, my mom looked at me with a smile and said, “He’s left handed.” Almost my whole family writes with their right hand. From my sister to my father to my grandparents. My aunts, my uncles, my cousins; every one of us is right handed. But my mom? Well, my mom is left.

“Hmm.” I remember thinking. “I guess he is left handed.”

I had known Bill six months at the time and I’d never noticed. It had either never occurred to me, or just never mattered. But right then, in that moment, with my mom seeing someone else writing the same way she did, and knowing that this person would one day join our family, I knew… Bill fit.

Now when Bill and I work together, I stand to his right side, he stands to my left. And it fits. We assemble each sandwich by him loading on the bacon as I toss on the cheese. He lays out the tomatoes as I drizzle on the sauce. I grab one thing on the right, and he grabs another on the left, and it fits. Any other combination; two lefties, two righties, if I were a lefty and he were a righty, wouldn’t work. We’d both be reaching for the lettuce with no one grabbing for the onions. Our lines would be crossed and our sandwiches would be tangled. Where would we be then?

One day, when Melt Sandwich Shops line the streets like Starbucks’ (insert ™ or © or ® here… don’t sue me, Starbucks :), Bill and I won’t be the only one’s assembling our intricate sandwiches. We’ll have a team of highly trained professionals that know to grab the broccoli rabe with their left hand and the slow roasted tomatoes with their right. Because for us, well... that’s just what fits.

Westchester Weekends: Captain Lawrence

It’s the weekend once again! So it’s time to bring you another fab find from wonderful Westchester County. This weekend, Bill and I headed up to Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in Pleasantville. We had first heard of Captain Lawrence a few years ago after moving down from Mystic, Connecticut. In Mystic, Cottrell is the reigning champ of local beers, but unfortunately not widely available in other areas. So Bill had to find a new local brew to fill the void. Once we discovered Captain Lawrence, he was hooked! I have to admit, I'm not a beer drinker myself, but even I enjoyed this one. As soon as we heard it was only a short drive from White Plains, we had to check it out.

We walked in the door of the tasting room which was so packed I had to break out my stealth maneuvering skills just to get inside. It was no wonder why either... free samples galore! Any of their 5 brews on tap were up for grabs.

We tasted one of each, their IPA, 'Espresso Stout', 'Freshchester', their seasonal 'Winter Rye', and my personal favorite, 'Liquid Gold'.

After choosing our faves, it was time for buying. And the best part? They bottle it up right there.

I think I'm hooked! Which is quite an accomplishment for this non-beer lover. If we ever add beer to our Melt repertoire, you know which one will be first on the list!

What's New: The Snowstorm

Good evening Melty's!

Noo don't you worry... there is not another snowstorm on the horizon... we're just keeping y'all up to date with our next and newest sandwich combo of the week! This one will make its debut on Monday, and trust me when I say, you don't wanna miss it. We named it "The Snowstorm" with the assumption that February would be dumping just as much of that white stuff on us as the lovely month of January did. After serious deliberation on changing it's name, we decided to let the name stay with the hopes that the only snowstorm we'll be experiencing from here on out this year will be on our sandwiches!

This combo has Bill's mouth watering horseradish sauce, Muenster cheese, and sweet caramelized white onions. We recommend it with the Aged Beef Top Round or the Beef Brisket, but it also pairs up nicely with the daily fish, rosemary dijon pork loin, grilled portobello or the grilled chicken breast.

Westchester Weekends: Temptation Tea House

It's finally the weekend! So we're dishin out another fab find in Westchester. Recently we headed over to Mt. Kisco to snag a little known secret available there... one of the most delicious beverages known to man: Bubble Tea.

Bubble what?!

Yes.. Bubble Tea. It is a Chinese beverage made from brewed tea mixed with ice, then flavored with sugar and milk, and can be ordered in various fruit flavors. The thing that makes Bubble Tea different from any normal drink is the tapioca 'pearls' that are slurped up with the oversized straw. Bill and I stumbled upon this tasty treat a couple years ago in Chinatown and since then we haven't been able to find Bubble Tea anywhere else outside of the city. Recently we had heard that the Temptation Tea House in Mt. Kisco makes a delicious Bubble Tea, so of course we had to investigate!

And yes, it waaaas delicious.

Check 'em out! It's definitely worth a try.

What's New?

Keeping with yesterday's topic of moving forward... We have a few new things going on here at Melt that we just have to share!

First off, our newest Sandwich Combo of the week! With Valentines Day just around the corner, yesterday we debuted "The Valentine". This combo has creamy Brie cheese, Crushed Cranberries, Red Onions and Bill's homemade (and SO tasty) Raspberry Vinaigrette drizzle. We recommend it with the slow roasted turkey, grilled chicken breast, grilled portobello mushroom, or the thin sliced pork loin, but really it goes pretty much with everything!

We want to see you! We've also listened when you told us Melt would totally be great for dinner, and I SO agree. We need to be open at night.....So......

Standing Up, Moving Forward

He's always standing, this husband of mine. The whole day, he never sits. On the rare occasion he does grab a chair, one foot will stay firmly planted on the ground with the other ready to spring up at a moments notice. That's just how he does it. To him, it's normal. Why sit when there's so much to be standing for?

He's always moving, this husband of mine. Moving forward even more towards a positive outlook on life, on his relationships with others, and on everything around him; he never slows down. I consider myself an optimist, but Bill takes optimism to a whole new level. Today after we finished putting together the daily soups I glanced over to the stove and saw something boiling away.

Wait, we already had our soups for the day. I had seen him finishing them up earlier. Our menu technically only calls for one daily soup and as it was he had made three. Was he really adding one more?

"Well, one of our regulars called earlier. He's super sick," he said, "So I'm making him chicken soup. I have a little extra time right now and it should help him feel better."

Always moving.

From 5am to 11am Bill has already put in a full day of work before the lunch hour even starts, and he's still pushing to do more. He never stops. And this inspires me for everything in my own life. His love of what he does makes me work harder and push myself further without even realizing it. He has such a passion for not only his job but for his life, which motivates all of us here at Melt to constantly work harder. To be better. It is a goal most people, including myself, consciously strive for for on a daily basis. With Bill, it just is who he is. Living this adventure together with him is something I don't ever take for granted as I watch him stand up and move forward in this business and in this life. Every day.

Everyone is always asking us what we eat. Do we eat all of our meals at Melt? Do we cook at home? Do we bring Melt home? Well, since we love sharing almost as much as we love food, we'll show you! We're turning the original "Our Table" post into a little blog-series to give you a glimpse into what we eat when we're not eating Melt. (But really, Melt will always be our favorite :)

Last night we headed over to my sister, Erin, and her boyfriend, Chris' house for a little Superbowl par-tay. I love the Superbowl mainly because it's one night where football lovers and non-sports fans alike can both enjoy a game. Whether it be for the footbal, for the food, or for the commercials, everyone loves a good Superbowl party. At the Hall household, Bill and I take our Superbowl food seriously. Even though Bill is more into the game while I'm much more into the commercials, we both agree on the food. Without further ado, here's what hit our table for The Big Game.

How can you watch a game of pigskin without some potatoskin?

I kindly decided to share the 'Moonlight Chaource' cheese from my trip to the Farmers Market

A love of fresh food doesn't stop with Bill and I... My sister whipped up these tasty homemade soft pretzels. Dipped in butter and salt, they were deeeelish-ious.

She also made another perfect football food, Guacamole.

And of course, what game is complete without the classic french onion dip?!

Here's where Bill's creative genius came into play. Buffalo chicken macaroni and cheese. The additional 5 or so pounds I gained was SO worth it.

Bill's made-from-scratch meatball marinara. Heavenly.

We didn't stop at the snacks! Dessert was a must.

And.. of course.. last but not least.. the necessity to any football game and successful Superbowl Party (and Bill's absolute favorite beverage):

Westchester Weekends: Chappaqua Farmers Market

Happy Saturday!

Today we were finally able visit one of Westchester's Farmers Markets. We're always trying to find ways to integrate local products into our menu, so what a better way then to go straight to the source: the farmers. We've been wanting to check out some local Farmers Markets for quite some time, but most of them pack it in for the winter and don't start up again until early Spring. We recently heard of one that is held year round, rain or shine, on Saturdays in Chappaqua. I was all over it. This morning I slipped into my rain boots, pulled out the umbrella and headed up to check it out. The best part? It was all inside! No rain boots needed after all.

Fresh local cheeses graced the tables, straight from the farm. The farmer herself told me all about the beneficial probiotics in each cheese they produce. It sounded wonderful. Well, as wonderful as 'probiotics' can sound I suppose, but she assured me they were a good thing. Then, as if she read my mind, she asked me to sample every cheese on the table. Asked me! Um.. yes please. After my first bite I quickly realized that a sample was not going to be enough. I think would have bought every single one if I didn't feel the looks coming on from the other customers...

One cheese would do for now. Moonlight Chaource. Almost like Brie only with a richer and sharper flavor.

Since Bill had to stay back at the shop, he sent me on a mission to find out all about the meats. And find out I did. All organic, straight from the farm and unbelievably fresh. Maybe not anytime soon, but we hope to carry some of these at Melt in the future.

And the mushrooms?! Ohhh the mushrooms. Give me a little olive oil and butter and I could have had myself a meal right there.

As I was walking in there were quite a few people leaving with bags full of the leafiest veggies I'd ever seen. Didn't take me long to find the source.

Oh. Yes. Yes. Yes... Desserts. I bought two. They are both for me. Sorry Bill.

The indoor market will continue every Saturday through April.

Lunch Hour Laughs: Bad Paid For Photos

Happy snowy Thursday! We hope you made it safely to work/school this morning and perhaps were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way! Either that or we hope you're snuggling up keepin' a-toasty-warm at home (which does sound wonderful right about now after my drive in! Let's just say I-95 and I are no longer friends).

Today we're bringing a chuckle to your lunch hour with some Grade-A photography. Although I haven't seen one in years, I'm pretty sure that somewhere out there a J.C. Penny must still exist with the family photo "set" fully decked out with hanging bed sheet backdrops and massive cameras strapped to scary tripods. And this, I'm guessing, would be where these photos came from.

2010. One Great Year.

There are some years we live that pass by more or less un-eventful, un-surprising, and un-memorable. Not for the bad necessarily, but every year can't be the best year. Then there are those years that are so eventful, so surprising, and so memorable that looking back over those 365 days humbles us as a people for how lucky we are to live in this world.

For us here at Melt, 2010 has been one of those years.

It's certainly been a busy year, a crazy year, a hectic year, but, most of all, an amazing year. The list of things that we're so unbelievably grateful for that have happened over the course of 2010 seem never-ending. Bill and I sat down and thought long and hard about how we could even write something that would encompass why we'll always remember 2010. We decided on our top five things that made 2010 the most unforgettable year of both of our lives to date:

5. Reaching Melt's first year anniversary.
We opened our doors in June 2009, and in June 2010 we hit one year. It's quite a scary thing to open a business. To put everything you have and all that you are into something and lay it right out on the line.... it's not easy. But we did it!

We went from looking something like this...

And finally to what Melt looks like today...

Making it that first year meant that everything we did to be here was worth it. And then some. Laying all that we had on the line, and not only hitting, but surpassing that milestone of a year..... it was just incredible.

4. Streamlining how we operate not only to move faster, but to be better.
At the beginning, almost everything we did seemed so difficult and so impossible to get past. Sometimes we would reach the end of the day, look at each other with eyes full of stress and frustration, and just want to cry. And sometimes we would (Okay.. I would.. Bill's pretty tough ;). It didn't happen all of a sudden, but over the past year we've realized that those same things we never thought we'd get past are now what we could do probably with our eyes closed. Sure, there's always going to be more obstacles ahead, and so many more ways to be even better, but realizing how far you've already come can be what gets you to where you want to be. Knowing what you need to do and doing it. That is a wonderful gift 2010 has given us.

3. Our incredible Melt staff.
I do tend to talk a lot about Bill and I, but trust me, we are certainly not a two man operation! 2010 has brought us a staff that we could not do this without. We may be small, but we're a family.

The longest member of our family is Luis, our delivery driver. Getting our food across town at lightning speeds, I don't think anyone could do it better.

Next to join us was Matt. Constantly making all of us laugh, we couldn't be any prouder to work beside him every day.

Then Tomas jumped on the Melt train. A true family man at home and at work, Tomas is an essential part of our team.

Our most recent addition, Nick. And Nick, no one wraps a sandwich like you do!

...And of course we have to give honorable mention to our guy Jesse! Even from India, he'll always be Melt family.

2. Being honored by Westchester Magazine and the entire Westchester County as having "2010's Best Sandwich".
Getting that first phone call telling us we had the "Best Sandwich"... no words can describe that moment.

And to top it off, our sandwich appeared in the issue!

Traditions. In our family we have them pretty much accidentally. These things that we've done year after year just sort of happened and became things we stuck to. Most of them started long ago, probably longer than I can even date back to. Without question, the most important tradition in our family is Christmas Eve dinner.

Every year on this night we sit around the table for Alici Spaghetti. Yes, Alici, pronounced 'A-leech', is anchovy pasta. Eating this on Christmas Eve dates back as far as I can remember, as far as my father can remember, and even as far as my 93 year old Grandmother can remember. I always thought it was something everyone did. Ya know, like turkey on Thanksgiving, or cake on your birthday. Year after year we ate Alici with my grandma sitting in the same chair at the same table and we'd hear the same story. Back one Christmas Eve, somewhere around 1965, she decided to make something different for a change. Switch it up a little bit. Ravioli sounded good. Harmless enough, and of course just as delicious. My dad, however, thought differently. He was 12, maybe 15, and as soon as he heard Alici would not be on the table, that was it. He left. Walked in the freezing cold to a friends house and didn't come back until after dinner was long over. And although I'm sure it took a long time for my grandmother to forgive him, there was not a single year after that where my father has not eaten Alici on Christmas Eve.

It starts with the basic components. Anchovies and Olive Oil.

Both go straight into the pan along with a whole bunch of fresh chopped parsley and a lot of garlic. And by a lot, I mean, a LOT.

It's then sauteed together with a fork to blend the anchovies.

This is my moms job. Many have tried it, but no one can compare.

Then comes the pasta. Four pounds and no less. Leftovers are a must.

Dump on the sauce, mix well. Very well. (We call in the big guns for this job)

And that's it!

What It's Really About

Merry Christmas Eve-Eve! We hope your shopping is just about wrapped up (pun totally intended) and you're ready to relax and soak in some good times with family and friends.

Those of you that follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or here on the blog know that we've been busy over here boxing up and shipping out gifts for our Letters to Santa. Some of the toys that have been coming through our door seriously make me wish I was a kid again. I mean, a super soft stuffed animal that bursts out into hysterical laughter rolling around at the wave of your hand?!

Literally ROTFL

Just one wave and you're a comedian with an audience that actually laughs! Love it.

Then there was this jump rope made of rubber bands.. but wait.. you make it yourself. Um, can I please be 8 again?

Count me IN!

The last of the boxes full of gifts should have arrived at their destination today and hopefully will be opened up Christmas morning!

A truly special moment came for us to actually witness when one of our customers, Steve, chose a letter where a little guy,"J", asked for clothes, an Xbox and food. We were thinking the clothes would be a great gift, but Steve went even further. He got all 5 kids and their mom an Xbox, multiple games, and yes, food. We were able to get in touch with J's mom who came to Melt this afternoon to pick everything up. It was quite a touching moment that will not soon be forgotten.

a roast AND 20lbs of potatoes. YUM.

And this... This is what it's all about.

Santa's Presents

Round I of Santa Letters have been boxed up and shipped out! I just have to start by saying we have been so, no, rather completely overwhelmed. The response from this incredible community has been nothing short of amazing. For every letter that we handed out, we expected to get back a t-shirt or two, maybe even a sweatshirt and pair of pants. And don't get me wrong, that certainly would have been wonderful in and of itself, but that's not what we got. Nope, not even close. We got bags. Bags and bags that were loaded up full of toys and games, books, clothes.... Bags looking like they belong on a "Glad" commercial, packed so full we definitely heard them cry uncle more than once.

So this, White Plains, this is just one example of the generosity and kindness that YOU possess. The generosity that has overwhelmed us here at Melt and the generosity that will light up the eyes of so many children, and I'm sure their struggling parents, this Christmas morning.

Here's just one of the letters with its gifts. Two children, 2 1/2 years old and one month old, and we're guessing the letter was written by their mother. So really, could there be any more perfect of a shirt than "Mommy needs a date night!"?!... love it!

Single mother that is out of work with three boys. Clothes galore, wrestling men, cars, trucks, games... I mean, seriously?! Incredible.

This first round was shipped out this morning, plus even more that we didn't catch a picture of, and we're expecting to send out the rest of the gifts within the next week or so. White Plains, you amaze us daily. And we love you for it.

* One letter per customer.

* You will be fully responsible for fulfilling the letter once you take it from us. * For the letters that have gift requests for multiple children, team up with another person! If you both promise to fulfill one letter together, you each will receive a drink and bag of chips!

Never Underestimate the Power of... American Cheese

American Cheese. It is so quintessentially...well... American. It's something I would guarantee every single one of us has peeled right from it's clingy clear plastic wrapper and eaten, straight up. And of course, there's the sandwiches it creates. I challenge anyone out there to say that you don't love an ooey gooey grilled cheese coated in butter and dripping with that yellow melty goodness every now and again. Sure it's not the best choice to keep within that steamed vegetable and leafy green diet, but you knoow it's good!

One of our customers actually refuses to eat his grilled cheese with anything other than our yellow american. Like a fine wine that's turned murky, he'll take one look at bread containing white cheese and, without hesitation, back to us it comes.

2,000 calories later, this is now gone.

I too adore a good grilled cheese. However, for some reason in the past year and a half that we've been open, I had yet to eat one with yellow American. What's more, I had yet to eat anything with American. Bill is a huge cheese lover and has stocked our menu full of cheeses. Aged Vermont White Cheddar, Emmentaler Swiss (with the really big holes no less), Sharp Provolone, Gruyere, Fresh Whole Milk Mozzarella, Feta, Gorgonzola, Crumbled Bleu... the list goes on. So, every day for the past year and a half I've made my own sandwiches with one of these 'superior' cheeses.

That is... until yesterday.

It started with my serious case of sandwich envy. Each day I write down customers' orders and watch as Bill constructs their sandwiches. But, it is that moment they come out from under the fire that makes me need that sandwich. The aroma as it flies by my nose on it's way to be wrapped, the look of the sauce bubbling up combining with the cheese, surrounding the late addition of lettuce... Mmm MMM! That sandwich will be mine. Yesterday one came out spilling over with American Cheese. It looked good. It looked REALLY good. I had to make my own. After one bite I vowed never to underestimate the power of this cheese again. It brought me back. Back to school days where my mom packed my lunch with the cookies strategically hidden underneath the American cheese and turkey sandwich, back to summer afternoons making open faced tomato and melted american cheeses in my aunt's kitchen. Back to fun times surrounded by family. And a cheese that can do that, well, I don't blame our 7 year old customer. He knows there's just nothing that compares to that look, that texture, that meltiness, and that unmistakable taste of Yellow American Cheese.

And that right there is a power to be reckoned with.

Inspiration in a Food Court

Just got forwarded this video through an e-mail and I had to share. No matter what religion, this is so inspiring. I have seen videos like these before, taking place in areas with thousands of people, like Grand Central or Central Park, but there's something about the small community feel of this one that I just love.

Guess inspiration can even be found in a mall food court.

Letters to Santa Coming to Melt!

Is your list this long?!

Well, it's December! Which can mean many things. It's the official start of the Holiday Season (which this year also coincides with Hanukkah)... yay! Candles, and bows, and lights, and trees, and garland, oh my! Secondly, it's officially (well, to those of us that didn't get everything accomplished on black Friday at least) the start of the serious gift-buying. Presents, and shopping, and lines, and hiding, and wrapping oh.....yikes. We all get so caught up in buying these gifts for those we love, but what about those that may not be as fortunate?

For the past few years Bill and I have participated in a program run by the US Post Office called "Operation Letters to Santa". Post Office workers separate letters mailed to Santa Claus, open them up, and organize them into bins. The public is then allowed to read through the letters and grant a few Christmas wishes for children who's families may not be able to get as caught up with the 'present-ing' that a lot of us take for granted.

We started participating about five years ago and have been hooked ever since. It's minimal effort, but can really help make a child's Holiday special. Some of the letters are mailed directly to "SANTA" in scratchy mis-spelled writing and are meant for Santa only, where as some others are addressed to "Operation Santa Claus" from parents that know of the program. Of course you'll come across the "Give me 10 games for my Nintendo Wii and 5 more for my DS" or "I want a Pony", but the ones that really get me are the "Dear Santa, Please bring a sweatshirt for my little sister so she doesn't have to be cold at night" letters, or "Could you please give me a backpack for school?". Those are the one's that make Christmas real.

SO.. my point is (and I do have one) this year we will be bringing Operation Letters to Santa to Melt!! The White Plains post office doesn't know their exact day yet of when the letters will first become available to the public, but we wanted to give you a heads up that we'll be doing this! As soon as they open it up, we will get them here!

Here's how it will work:

- We'll have a collection of letters for you choose from.

- For every letter you promise to fulfill, you will receive one free beverage of your choice (yes, Joe Tea's included!) AND one bag of chips!

- And the added bonus: It will make YOU feel great too.

As soon as the White Plains Post Office releases the letters we will be starting this here at Melt, so stay tuned for the official start date!

Food vs. Bill

Over the holiday I found out something very important about my husband, our chef, Bill. Something that I have been trying to find out for the past four years and have never been successful in finding. It wasn't what he is thankful for, what makes holidays special for him, or even his goals or aspirations in life. Nope. I finally found, after all these years, a food that Bill hates.

And this for me, is a first.

Before I tell you what it is, I should let you in on a little background about Bill's relationship with food. He loves it. I don't even know if there's a word to describe how much Bill loves food. He became a chef right out of college, finishing top of his class at culinary school, then cooking gourmet food around the world and in his 5-star restaurants for the next 20 some-odd years. When Bill and I first started dating I used to pick up his copy of The Food Lover's Companion (basically a dictionary of every food term in existence) and randomly flip to a page to quiz him on his food knowledge only to find out there was not one word he didn't know.

I quickly learned all of this about Bill at the beginning, and as our relationship grew I realized that his love of food didn't stop at 'gourmet'. Bill loved all food. Packaged food? Give him a bag of Cheetos and 20min later they're gone. Canned food? Well of course no other ravioli could compare to Chef Boyardee. Anything and everything. This is what brought me to my quest to find something that Bill didn't like. He had eaten fish eyes with natives in Bora Bora, turtle meat in Florida, Soursop (a vegetable) in Costa Rica, and loved it all. But still, for four years, I had been forced to settle on the fact that there wasn't anything edible that Bill didn't like.

That is, until this weekend. I found a food that Bill hates. Hates the thought of, hates the smell of and don't even mention how they taste. Personally, I could take them or leave them, but Bill? He despises this food product. Well, what is it??

Thankful for You

This past week we've been getting especially excited for Thanksgiving. For some reason this year seems so different here at Melt than last year. It can't be the weather since that's pretty much the same, we were already open here last year, at that point for 5 months, so that's not it, and we did pretty much the same things that we're doing now. But this year still seems different.

It must the people. The relationships. We've grown to love our customers so much it's crazy. And not just a 'Ya you guys are great!' kinda love, but really love love them. It must be what's making this year so very different. Better. Knowing so many of the faces that come through our door makes it much more real that we are here. We're here and we're here to stay and that is a great feeling to have. Before opening Melt we faced so much opposition and skepticism from strangers we talked to. We heard everything from "You're opening a business in this economy?!" and "Aren't you scared you're going to fail?!" to "Are you sure you guys really want to take this risk?!". But, despite the critics, we opened our doors to an amazing town and a the warmest welcome from everyone that came in.

By the time Thanksgiving rolled around we did have these same great people that we liked and people who liked us back, but, we were still nervous. Still a little unsure of what we had here. We were busy (and we knew our food was da bomb!) but looking back it wasn't the same feeling that we have now. Over the past year we've been able to stand here as a strong part of White Plains. To open our doors every morning to someone that's waiting to get in... To be able to wave to people on the street as they walk by... It's something truly special and something that makes us feel so much more full than overindulging in any meal ever could.

So this year on Thanksgiving not only will we be thankful for our family, our close friends, the home we live in and the food that will be at the table, but we will truly be thankful to you. Our customers. The people of Westchester County that come to us every day with smiles on their faces that open up their lives to let us in. To be a part of that is more than we ever could have hoped for back when we were painting the walls and measuring the space. We had started Melt hoping that strangers would buy our sandwiches, and it's became friends enjoying our meals. Every day. And for that, we are especially excited and thankful beyond words.

Melt Has a Blog?!

...Geeze who doesn't have a blog these days!

Yes, we've started a blog. We have to admit, we're not writers. We make great food and that's about the extent of our talents. And talking. We love to talk. So, we'll to use this blog to talk to you guys about everything we have going on over here at 'the shop' (as Bill and I call it). We'll be starting some pretty cool contests, special menu items, and who knows, maybe one day there'll be updates on a new Melt opening near YOU!

Well, lets not get ahead of ourselves, I did say maybe.

Anyway, as most of you guys that stop in often know already, we love to hear everything about your lives, remember your names, and even your kids names if we can, so we'll probably be gettin' a little personal with us here on the blog too. Bill and I (Kristin) opened this shop together as a dating couple, then an engaged couple 3 months later, and now as a married couple, so needless to say it's a pretty personal business for us. We consider our staff family and our customers friends, which will never change as it's pretty much a part of who we are as Melt.
